The New Mexico State city of Farmington, with a population bordering on 46,000, is located in San Juan county and is the home of Sun Ray Park racetrack. The city is located at the junction of the San Juan River and the Animas River and first staged racing in 1984 when the track operated as San Juan Downs Racetrack. The track operated for 9 years, although crowds decreased over time and it finally closed in 1993. When New Mexico revisited its gambling laws, allowing racinos to open, the track on the County Fairgrounds reopened as Sun Ray Park, hosting its first meeting on 1st October 1999. It offers a programme of thoroughbred and quarter horse races on its 6 furlong oval track, with separate 4 ½ and 8 furlong chutes, which share a 302 metre home straight. The principal race is the San Juan County Commissioners Handicap, although other high profile races include the New Mexico Breeders Stakes and Four Corners Senora Stakes for quarter horses, and the Aztec Oaks and Jack Cole Handicap for thoroughbreds. |
